1909 Vintage South Bend Model 227 Pocket Watch, Railroad Grade - $300 in Kamloops, British Columbia for sale

$300

1909 vintage South Bend Model 227 pocket watch, railroad grade and approved for railroad service.

MOVEMENT: 16 size, open face, lever set, three finger nickel bridge model, "Adjusted Temperature & 5 Positions", 14k gold center wheel, "21 Jewels", No. "227". The serial #583231 dates it to 1909. The watch had a COA (cleaning, oiling, and adjustment) last year and runs strong and is very accurate.

THE DIAL: The white double sunk enamel dial and fine dark purple spade hands are not original to the watch but are of the same vintage. The dial has a few light hairline cracks between the 7 and 8, but they are very fine, barely visible to the naked eye. The minute hand looks to have been bent and professionally re-straightened and again, this is hardly noticeable.

THE CASE: The gold filled case is in good condition with no sign of "brassing". It has a floral shield with a "Barleycorn Pattern" marked Fahys Montauk Guaranteed 20 Years Serial # 19116347. It is 50mm in diameter not including the pendant. The crystal is glass, with no scratches. The bow is loose, but the pendant crown still has good grip.

This particular watch bearing serial #583231 was the 231st made on the first run of a 1000. There were 28 runs of the Model 227 and an estimated total of 45,000 manufactured between 1909 and 1928. The first few runs of 1000 used round-head screws on the movement and the remaining 42,000 or so used flat-heads. You will notice from the photos that this watch uses round-heads indicating its early manufacture.
Clement Studebaker III was President of the South Bend Watch Company. He was from the same family that manufactured the Studebaker automobiles in South Bend.

This is a very beautiful pocket watch and the photos do not do it justice.

$300

Hope, B.C
